Your care doesn’t end after you leave our hospital. Hospitals are always available to answer questions once you are back in your own home. Before leaving the hospital be sure to take down department name and numbers where you received care. Be sure to get day, night and weekend numbers.
Following an illness there are often subtle changes making you vulnerable to accidents. The following suggestions can prevent a relapse.
- Always get up slowly after sitting or lying down. Take your time and make sure you have your balance
- Don’t rush to answer the door
- Keep non-slip mats in the bath tub
- Avoid standing on chairs, stools and ladders
- Tape down all carpets and rugs that might ruffle or slip. Do not place small loose rugs in high traffic areas.
- Have all broken steps repaired
- Have your eyes and glasses checked annually
- Have a professional review all prescription and over-the-counter medicines for side effects such as dizziness or drowsiness. Ask your pharmacist how any new medications will react when taken with current medication
- Consider a medical alert system (very inexpensive)
- Remove the spring on storm doors
- Keep a flashlight by your bed
- Install nightlights to brighten the path to the bathroom at night
For extra precaution ask your doctor to arrange a home visit by an Occupational Therapist who is trained to help you regain your independence. An OT can check your home and suggest simple changes to make everyday living easier.
